Is AI voice good enough to answer your phone yet?
When we talk to owners about voice agents, the first question is almost never about cost or setup. It's "will my customers hear a robot?" That's the right question, because a caller who feels brushed off by a machine doesn't call back. So instead of answering it in writing, we made our own ad with the same kind of voice we'd put on your phone line. Press play above before you read the rest.
What you just heard
Both voices are generated. No voice actor, no studio, no editing beyond putting the two parts next to each other. They come from Eleven v4, the newest speech model from ElevenLabs, released at the end of September, using two of its stock voices.
Here is the script exactly as we wrote it, brackets included:
Owner: [tired, under his breath] Eleven p.m. Three missed calls... two voicemails... and the lead already went with someone else. [sigh]
Narrator: [warm, confident] What if your phone picked up every time? Trebien builds voice agents for small teams. [brisk] They answer, qualify, book the call, and hand you the notes. [knowing] And we'll tell you when a voice agent is the wrong fix. [reassuring] Then we stay on the line. [relaxed, friendly] First call is questions, not pitches. Trebien. Always-on A.I. ops.
The brackets are the interesting part
The words in brackets aren't read out. They're direction, the same notes you'd give a voice actor: tired, brisk, reassuring, a sigh. Older speech models read words correctly and flatly. This generation takes direction, and that's what changes the answer to "will it sound like a robot."
On a real phone line, that matters more than in an ad. A caller who's annoyed about a late delivery needs a different tone than one booking a Tuesday slot. When we build a voice agent, deciding how it should sound in each of those moments is part of the build, not an afterthought.
Where a voice agent earns its keep
Voice is just another front door to the workflows we already build. The ones that pay off fastest:
- Missed and after-hours calls. The lead from the ad, calling at 11pm, gets answered, qualified, and booked instead of going to voicemail and then to a competitor.
- The same five questions, all day. Opening hours, pricing ranges, whether you cover their area. A voice agent handles them and passes anything unusual to a person.
- Booking and rescheduling. Straight into your calendar, with a confirmation text.
Where it's the wrong fix
The same rule from how to tell if a workflow is worth automating applies here: the more expensive a wrong answer is, the more checking you build in. A voice agent shouldn't quote a custom job, handle a complaint that needs judgment, or give advice in a regulated field on its own. And every caller who asks for a person should get one, quickly. An agent that traps people is worse than voicemail.

If you want to test what your greeting or FAQ would sound like before talking to anyone, ElevenLabs has a free plan and you can paste in your own text: try Eleven v4 here. That's an affiliate link, so we earn a commission if you later pay for a plan. It doesn't change what we recommend; we'll tell you on a call if voice is the wrong place to start.
If missed calls are the workflow costing you the most this month, that's a good thing to bring to the Listen call. We'll work through it against your actual call volume, not a demo.
FAQ
Was the ad voiced by a real person?
No. Both voices in the ad were generated with Eleven v4, the newest speech model from ElevenLabs, using two of its stock voices. There was no voice actor or studio, and no editing beyond joining the two parts.
What do the words in brackets in the script do?
They are direction for the model, not words it reads out. Tags like tired, brisk, reassuring or a sigh change how a line is delivered, the same way notes to a voice actor would.
Which calls is a voice agent good for?
Missed and after-hours calls that would otherwise go to voicemail, the same handful of questions callers ask all day, and booking or rescheduling appointments straight into your calendar.
When is a voice agent the wrong fix?
When a wrong answer is expensive: quoting custom jobs, complaints that need judgment, or advice in a regulated field. Any caller who asks for a person should be able to reach one quickly.
